Manifestations of Infinity

During the second meeting of Infinity and Beyond, each of us discussed what we believe is our two best manifestations of infinity. Some had unique perspectives and some had similar perspectives on their belief of infinity. First, our professors defined manifestation as, “an event, action or object that clearly shows or embodies something, especially a theory or abstract idea.” Second, each of us had to explain our justifications of why we chose a specific manifestation to be infinite. We listened to each others ideas and discussed our perspectives to figure out if our manifestations could really be infinite or not. Towards the end of class, our perspectives have broadened to another level, maybe knowing something being infinite had to or doesn't have be a known unknown. It seems infinity had to be an indefinite manifestation that can be difficult to be put into words because some of the manifestations are so strong that there were no definite objections against it being infinite, (e.g., Time in the Present Tense, Reflection of Two Mirrors, Cycle of Life, Energy, Mobius Strip, Droste: Picture within a picture, Penrose Staircase). It will be interesting to see what type of categories we can create for these examples of infinity.

  1. The manifestations that were shown in class were definitely extraordinary. Each and every persons ideas and perspective put a new spin on something that I might have not really have thought to be infinite. Time in the present tense threw me for a loop and blew my mind. I was closed minded to the idea of the present always being the present no matter what. That one moment you are in is repetitive no matter what. Infinity is just full of surprises and completely amazing. <(@_@)>

  2. After listening to the manifestations of everyone in class, I realized how truly the idea of infinity has broadened my perspective. There are manifestations everywhere around us that reflects the concept of infinity. from the reflection of two mirrors to the idea of competition. Although the manifestations come in different forms, they all challenge your imagination. Like Juan pointed out, infinity is full of surprises.

  3. I agree with your post, I definitely feel that my idea of what could be a manifestation of infinity changed after last class. I was impressed by the variety of different examples that everyone came up with in our class. I thought that Hiba's quote about how "inifinity is a challenge, a monster" and her quote from the book "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" were very creative examples. I also liked seeing the "picture within a picture" example from Professor Carter's Droste image of the cacao advertisement. I thought the "Mobius Strip" was a very useful and imaginative way to process a physical representation of infinity. When we were folding and twisting the paper, it was a very interesting experience and helped me to understand yet another manifestation of infinity. I am looking forward to seeing the diversity in everyone's categories of infinity for next class as well.

  4. My manifestation of infinity would be human thought. Are our thoughts infinite? If I can imagine it I can think it. I couldn't ever imagine running out of thoughts. Unfortunately I was unable to make the last class, but it sounds like a lot of debate and questioning. Was there anything everyone agree'd to be infinite?
